hello

Hello all. Im male 22 from Yorkshire uk firstly id just like your views on how bad my pe is and weather id be able to get surgery as my old GP says its nothing to worry about and my new one told me its very mild and has sent me to physio for my posture. I have black outs if I push myself too hard when at the gym/jogging or even just standing up too quick but my main concern is the way it looks. whats my chances of getting surgery on the NHS? cheers.

First things first, your blackouts are not caused by your pectus. They are mutually exclusive. You need to have a resting echocardiogram and probably in addition have a stress echocardiogram that looks very close at your valves. The stress echo should also have you hooked up to a heart monitor so if your blacking out is being caused by some sort of arrythmia such as ventricular tachycardia or SVT, they'll catch it. Two birds, one stone. Blacking out could be a symptom of a serious underlying problem. I would schedule an appointment with a cardiologist and have them investigate this first. Also, It's not really uncommon for people with pectus ex. to also have some sort of heart problems like dilated aortas, mitral valve prolapse or bicuspid aortic valves. So please get that checked out.

As for you PE and surgery, from the pics it looks like you probably have moderate PE (based on Haller index), however it looks more mild because it's symetrical, narrow and you have nice muscular development of your chest muscles. I think you would be a candidate for surgery, particularly if you have other symptoms like decreased exercise tolerance and psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression.

Read up on here, lots of info about getting nussed in UK and NHS funding.

Good luck. I'd recommend toning down your workouts until you figure out what is causing your black out spells. I'd stay away from squats and dead lifts for sure and probably keep my heart rate in an aerobic range.
